Thoughts on the 6x07 preview clip and the shape of the season

So.

Sam has no soul. Thus he can't feel. Can't care.

Does Castiel have a soul? He's already said he can't care, he doesn't have the luxury.

Dean has railed against him for no longer being human. Castiel has said he has had to do regrettable things.

Is it possible that by the end of the season Castiel will want a human soul of his own? So he can feel again? Or that in some similar vein, Castiel who cares but isn't allowed to acknowledge it will parallel Sam who wants to care but can't?

Wouldn't that be a wonderful way for the season to progress? Probably a little too chick-flicky for SPN, but a girl can dream.

I'd very much like to see Sam and Castiel both journey toward humanity from separate poles. It'd be wonderful, too, if Dean had to hold together his humanity, fearing losing it.

On an unrelated note, I'm wondering if the opening credits' "shattered glass" theme is a clue that Sam's soul is in fact in pieces, if the alphas hold those pieces and that's why the monsters are acting weird. That's my working theory right now. If monsters have a piece of a human soul - the devil's vessel's soul - that would definitely upend their habits/abilities. (If Sam doesn't sleep because he has no soul, then obviously his physical body is affected by the lack of a soul too. What if, not having a soul, his body doesn't decay toward death? That would again put him in the same bag as Castiel, whose body can be injured but does not age. Thus my earlier point.)

EDIT: In response to the idea that Cas DOES have feelings, I don't disagree. But I submit to you that angels' feelings are different than humans' - perhaps because angels have Grace where humans have a soul. Because angels do have emotion indeed, but their vessels' bodies don't decay. So what if Cas had to choose between Grace and a human soul, which would absolve him of his responsibilities but would also make him subject to time's ravages? This would be scintillating to watch.

But then we'd need someone to run heaven in his stead.

WHICH IS A GREAT ARGUMENT FOR BRINGING BACK GABRIEL. SEE ALT. SEASON 6.

Ahem. But I digress.

Thoughts? Shoot me down? Bolster me? Pester me to write fanfic? XD Write your own fanfic? XD

I love this theory. I really freaking love this theory.
Dear everyone who writes the show, please oh please oh please oh please make that idea happen.

Write fanfic! I'm rooting through the gabrielsam archives, and I just stumbled across one of your fics. I love your stuff, and I'm a big fan of there being more of it in the world. *nods*

Oh! That's a lovely theory and one I would love to see played out more.

You know what this makes me think of? Piers Anthony's Xanth series, where a half or even a quarter soul is enough to do the whole job. Share you souls pretty boys, share them! :D

rambling...lack of sleep, no coffee. v. sorry.
I interpreted Cas' line to mean that he can't allow himself to feel. That he's repressing his emotions because he doesn't have the time to feel guilty over the things he has to do (this is my mind officially makes him a Winchester).

My brain likes to associate Castiel with Amalthea from The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. She was human too for a little while:

"I will go back to my forest too, but I do not know if I will live contentedly there, or anywhere. I have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet. I am full of tears and hunger and the fear of death, though I cannot weep, and I want nothing, and I cannot die. I am not like the others now, for no unicorn was ever born who could regret, but I do. I regret."

That, in my head, is Castiel.

Or that in some similar vein, Castiel who cares but isn't allowed to acknowledge it will parallel Sam who wants to care but can't?

This I'd very much like to see.

While I am eating up all this angst with a spoon, if there isn't light at the end of the tunnel I'm gonna be deeply depressed.

I also really want Dean to make a decision to stop drinking but that's my own issues with alcoholism cropping up.

Re: rambling...lack of sleep, no coffee. v. sorry.
Oh I totally agree with what you said about Castiel being mirrored Amalthea. That's a brilliant comparison.

Re: rambling...lack of sleep, no coffee. v. sorry.
I actually thought about this. And I have a way the show COULD resolve it, but it's much more like fanwank and probably has no chance of being canon. If I could fanwank my own explanations into canon, though, I'd say angels have Grace where humans have a soul. Because angels do have emotion indeed, but their vessels' bodies don't decay. So what if Cas had to choose between Grace and a human soul, which would absolve him of his responsibilities but would also make him subject to time's ravages? This would be scintillating to watch.

This is an awesome theory (and would make an epic fic that I would read the shit out of. *cough*)

That...is an intriguing theory. And when Castiel said he "can't care" I don't think he meant "wasn't able to," since it seems obvious (at least to me) from what we've seen of him that he hates doing what he's been forced to lately. I think it's more of a season four type thing, where the ends justify the means, only this time it's worse, since Castiel isn't the one obeying the orders, he's the one giving them and he has to live with that.
Tiptoe39tiptoe39 on November 3rd, 2010 04:58 pm (UTC)
right, you're not the first to mention that. I edited a sort of fanwanky, speculative idea of how this could work into the post. If'n you're interested.

RE Edit: Well Anna did say angels didn't feel the way humans did. And certainly most of the angels we've seen (except Gabriel and Balthazar, who are special cases, since they left) have been more sober/emotionless. If you compare human!Anna to angel!Anna or human!Cas to angel!Cas, there's a huge difference.

And RE: Gabriel and Balthazar, I wish they would clarify the whole "fallen angel" thing. Lucifer, the paradigmatic example of a fallen angel, was cast down/cut off from Heaven and still has his Grace/is still an angel. Anna chose to fall, lost her Grace, and was reborn as a human. Castiel was cut off from Heaven and lost his Grace/became human. Gabriel and Balthazar left, but they weren't cut off, and still had their Grace. So what's the deal?
Tiptoe39tiptoe39 on November 3rd, 2010 05:26 pm (UTC)
It's a complicated mess. I think there are ways to rationalize/fanwank it, but I don't have the energy or time to do so now. So I'll just go with "yeah, it's a mess." ^_^

The writers have to come up with something clever. Sam can't get a damaged soul back. Well, not one damaged by 100+ years in Hell. Grace replentishes the angel vessel, but what is replentishing Sam? Is he drinking demon blood? Coz, without a soul why would he think it was wrong?
