This meta is dead! No, wait, it's not! No, wait, it is! No, wait...

1) New title card, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... the black, chunky, monsterblood, creepy ways. Fuuuuu I love it so much. And such an auspicious omen for an episode that made me think, HOLY FUCK SHOW IS BACK.

2) Let's discuss the overpowering sexiness of Godstiel. I'm sorry. Confident Cas? Smiling Cas? Kicking butt and taking names with those blue eyes of his? THROW ME ON THE ALTAR AND DO ME, GOD.

3) Random thought - Dean in the car was curled up in the fetal position, like he was in the womb trying to be reborn. Very symbolic/telling if you ask me, which you did when you clicked on the lj cut :P

4) "We glue him back together, too." classic line is classic. THANK YOU DEAN.

5) I did not expect to be so jazzed when I saw Mark Pellegrino's name on the credits. But boy was I jazzed. He is the surprise winner of this episode.

6) Twitter quote of the episode, from swan_butt: CAS'S FIRST ACT AS GOD ON EARTH IS TO DEFEND HIS RIGHT TO GAY SEX IT WITH DEAN

7) The girl on the TV says "He was young... and sexy." That's the moment Dean says "Yup, that's Cas." NO NEED FOR SUBTEXT.

8) OK. Needs moar Crowley, and did he actually say "Can't blame a girl for trying?" Because OH, CROWLEY!

9) Can I just say, I'm OK with a God who wants to bring most humans to heaven? Also, question: Why would Castiel want to bogart human souls in heaven? Do the human souls in heaven power angels in general? Or power God? Or is it out of some misplaced generosity? I mean, as far as we can tell, Cas actually has to swallow souls or touch them to gain power. Is heaven a Matrix situation, where humans are given their own personal hallucinations while the angels harvest their souls for power? AND IF SO WHERE THE FUCK IS THE FIC. AND CAN I SWITCH MY spn_cinema MOVIE TO WRITE IT.

10) Oh, look, Sam's getting choked. Must be a day ending in Y.

11) From Moose to Giraffe. (Or Jar-affe?)

12) I love how quickly fan reaction went from *_* to O.o when Cas took off his shirt and Alien started replaying in his tummy.

13) Twitter quote of the episode, honorable mention, from 1mountaingirl: MPREG ZOMBIE CAS.

14) I really wanted to smack Sera in that commercial. Go bing yourself, girlie. No, seriously, try it. See what people have to say. SIIIIGH. Then again, so far so good on this episode. It does feel to me a bit like Show is back on full throttle.

15) Only Crowley would affix a Post-It to an ancient manuscript.

16) Time out to discuss how pretty crystallized lightning is? They have a huge bolt of it in the Museum of Science in Boston. It's stunning.

17) DEATH IS A SASSY BITCH. I believe this covers the entirety of his appearance. oh my GOD such a sassy bitch. Seriously. I liked his no-Jack-Kennedy moment. (oh GOD that's showing my age)

18) THE HAPPINESS IN MY BRAIN WHEN DEATH SAID 'OLD ONES.' AND THE HAPPINESS IN MY HUSBAND'S FACE. HE'S BEEN PUSHING FOR SAM & DEAN VS. CTHULHU FOREVAH. Also Misha was right, the fourth letter of leviathan is indeed I. (Also, my spell check knows the word Cthulhu. SPELL CHECK I AM SIDE-EYING YOU RIGHT NOW.)

19) When Castiel starts to lose control? Really and truly terrifying. Fantastic.

20) We think it's ironically beautiful that Dean decided to watch some Overfiend when he's gonna end up fighting tentacle monsters. XDDDDDDDDDDDD

21) So I don't think anyone really bought Dean's "just kill him" act. Dean is like a lot of us in some respects -- he's trying to cauterize himself against further hurt by getting rid of Cas before he has to watch Cas self-destruct and/or tempt him again with their profound bond. And I love Sam not just for the Sassy innuendo but for reaching out, knowing that if Cas came to him, Dean would be forced to face his conflicting feelings. And the moment when Cas shows up? All my creyes forever.

22) Minor nitpick - I thought it was less than satisfying that Castiel only admitted his mistake because the souls were about to bust out of him. He did not exhibit remorse for his actions as God, his smiting and his spurning of his friends. He was like a thief who only is sorry that he/she is caught. If I were a writer on the show, I'd pitch the idea that Castiel will only be able to reject the leviathan when he is truly sorry for his actions. But then again, I spent the summer arguing that Castiel's actions (at least up to the point where he decided to keep the souls) were totally justified, so I guess I'm a fickle fan. XD

23) And then let's discuss the Dean/Cas scenes in the lab. My overriding comment on these scenes? BOBBY, GO LOOK THE FUCK FOR SAM SO DEAN AND CAS CAN KISS AND MAKE UP.

24) AND LUCIFER. MOTHEREFFING LUCIFER. YOU. YOU ARE AMAZEBALLS. WHAT AN AMAZING TWIST, SERIOUSLY. I expected hallucinations and whatnot, but Sam unsure if he's STILL IN HELL? Holy CRAP that's amazing. Bravo, writers.

25) DEAN RUSHING TO PROP UP HIS COLLAPSING BOYFRIEND. Just stating.

26) Twitter quote of the episode, self-congratulatory edition: THERE ISN'T ENOUGH WINE IN ALL OF EARTH AND PURGATORY FOR THIS. By me. Duh.

27) OH MY GOD DEAN AND CAS. Dean getting pissed at Cas' body and then immediately recanting all his anger when Cas woke up. BOBBY. GO LOOK FOR SAM. THEY NEED TO KISS.

28) Most significant line of this half of the episode: "I mean it." That says to me that Castiel is not gonna be gonzo, that he's going to find some strength or some way to fight his way back to Dean. Although he had better change his clothes if he does, because that boy is wanted for multiple murders.

29) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND THEN THE CREEPY. THE OMG MISHA IS THE KING TROLL OF ALL TROLLS. THE GRIN. THE OH MY GOD YES YES YES YES. CTHULHU!MISHA, PLEASE KINDLY TENTACLE-MOLEST ME, I'M GOOD WITH IT. XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

30) And then no Cthulhustiel in the preview? Those fuckers. I'm guessing he disappears pretty early on in the episode and most of the season will be spent looking for him. Ah well.

Have at it, kids! Thoughts?

Agreeing with about point 1) to.... um, 30)?

XDD

No, I loved this episode. I ADORE IT. I WANT TO MAKE FLUFFY RAINBOW CUPCAKES AND FEED IT FOR BEING A GOOD LITTLE EPISODE.

So I'll just comment on some of these, ecause the rest are pretty much summarized by OH GOD, YES THIS SO MUCH FOREVER.

- Crowley. Hnnnng. Also his comment about Cas liking to just bend 'em right over? Did many inappropriate things to my brain. Omnomnom.

EPIC SHOW THAT MESSES WITH OUR HEADS. Cannot fucking WAIT for the next episode to see what happens with Sam and Luci. And I'm a Cas girl, so it says a lot that I'm just as stoked about the Wall part as I am about the tentacle part.

I was so happy in the church scene. Because I actually do believe in God, and I think she's EXACTLY like Castiel claims he is in the church; UTTERLY INDIFFERENT TO SEXUAL ORIENTATION. Just- thank you, Show.

LOL @ the start: "sam, you have nothing to say to me. You stabbed me in the back." *snicker* appropriate on so many levels.

Bobby and Crowley flirting! Awww, Bobby thinks Crowley's pretty;___________; (what, I've been shipping them since their kiss okay)

OH GOD MISHA. JUST LET ME DROWN IN YOUR INSANE SMILE AND cREEPY EYES WITH THOSE BEAUTIFUl SMILE WRINKLES AND cALL IT A DAY OKAY. Misha rocked this episode so hard I'm surprised I can even stand. Just. ALL THE AWARDS.

LAstly- did you hear the evil genius!laugh at the end? LOL, so cliché but FUCK it works when it's Misha doing it. UNF.

Only thing I feel bummed about is douchey!Dean, tbqh. I mean, I can get why he's so an asshole, but I just really need the Show to actually show us what the guy's thinking instead of making us find all the excuses. All I'm saying is, a quiet emotionally-stunted talk with Sam or Bobby or whatever, where Dean can make some vague references about not being able to take it if he's hurt that badly again, and I'm good. But as of this ep? Nuh. Not buying it. :/

Otherwise, though, I'm walking on fucking rainbow clouds I'm so happy. And I don't believe for a single moment that Cas is dead, because HELLO. TRUSTING THE LEVIATHANS IS MAYBE NOT THE CLEVEREST THING EVER MKAY.

Quite agree with everything! Evil laugh over credits was not heard until my third watch through because I was too busy SCREAMING WITH GLEE!!!

Love the recap!! I shall post squee at some point I'm sure (I watched it three times in a row last night!!!), but this was well done! Love your side commentary. Fave: 6) Twitter quote of the episode, from swan_butt: CAS'S FIRST ACT AS GOD ON EARTH IS TO DEFEND HIS RIGHT TO GAY SEX IT WITH DEAN

I agree with everything you said. My brain is still not coherent, but I LOVED this episode and all the awards to Misha!!

Now I just hope that the writers stick with lore and bring back Gabriel so that he can have his epic mythological prophesied fight with the Leviathan (or some form of it). That would be so cool *_*
Darkamberdarkamber on September 24th, 2011 03:16 pm (UTC)
Haha! My first thought on seeing Castiel turn into the Leviathan(s?) was: Hello, Cthulhu! \o/

LOL! MY thoughts too! Sera worked in MPREG!!!!

It was hard enough to spell apocalypse! Now I got to learn two new words!!!!! UGH! ;)

23) And then let's discuss the Dean/Cas scenes in the lab. My overriding comment on these scenes? BOBBY, GO LOOK THE FUCK FOR SAM SO DEAN AND CAS CAN KISS AND MAKE UP.

Oh yes, their profound bond was strained and I wanted there to be love!!!!

I loved this episode! Loved it so much!!!! :D

Your LJ cut title alone perfectly captures my feelings about this episode.

It was a wonderful episode much better than I was expecting. I am so thrilled Cas was given a chance for redemption and absolutely adored Misha's acting throughout the ep.

I thought Dean was very in character so his coldness and shutting down didn't bother me at all. And, LOL, I only see Sam's friendship with Cas nothing else but I loved the way they repaired that and really enjoyed Sam's characterization much more than the sarcastic you left my soul in hell Sam.

Great premier. I rank it third behind Lazarus Rising and In my time of Dying.

IT WAS AWESOME AND THIS IS AWESOME!

CTHULHU!MISHA

I DIDN'T NOTICE MARK PELLIGRINO'S NAME IN THE CREDITS SO WHEN HE SHOWED UP I LEPT IN SURPRISE. THEN I DID MY HAPPY HAPPY LUCIFER DANCE.

Because I love Lucifer. But not in a Satanist way.

On the one hand, the ep had a lot of the same pacing & character issues that bugged me in S6. On the other hand, your #17 reminded me that having the back-and-forth with Death and Godstiel - which for the bros is practically run-of-the-mill at this point - with the totally context-free nice couple tied up in the doorway was some of the best stuff they've done in a _while_.

To your point about Cas' convenient remorse: I've been pondering Balthazar's death for a while (since that _can't_ be explained by crazy-making purgatory souls). I think in S6 what started as a determination to act alone to protect Dean's peace/happiness be became an obsession with doing it on his own. Having taken that first step, he became committed to following that path, to the idea that that was the _right_ path, that his choice, made alone, was the _right_ choice. So I think what we saw here, spurred by the massacre he _didn't_ control was, well, the realization that he wasn't in control, that he had made a bad choice, and that he should have taken Dean's help when it was offered (condescendingly or not) instead of pushing him away, and betraying him by hurting Sam. I think the regret for his actions towards Dean was real. I hope we can look at it as a first step, and that regret for his other actions - and remember, Cas is still pretty new to human morality - will come later, but I worry I'm overestimating New!Show.

Um. I had other things to say on other points, but maybe I should give your comment thread back now.
