[ficlet] Wedding Day (Dean/Castiel, PG)
Title: Wedding Day
Prompt: wedding
Fandom/Characters: Supernatural, Dean/Castiel
Medium: fic
Rating: PG
Warnings: No tuxedos, and no cocktail hour.
Summary: It's Dean's wedding day. For schmoop_bingo!

Dean woke up on the morning of his wedding day to a ray of sunshine that landed smack in his eyes. He batted at it with his hand, trying in vain to divert the sunbeam elsewhere. At least the weather was good.

Sam was sitting on the windowsill, and he shifted into the path of the sun. Dean mumbled a thank you, but by now he was too awake to stay in bed. "You're watching me sleep," he mumbled.

"I hear you like people who do that," Sam replied, and when Dean gave him a sleepy-pissy face, he went on. "That's what you get for getting drunk and telling stories."

"Dude, it was my bachelor party. Bobby was buying."

Sam just smiled impassively. Dean rolled out of bed and stumbled toward the bathroom.

Halfway through shaving, he called out to the other room. "Is it really Saturday already?"

"Yes, Dean, it's Saturday." He didn't need to see the grin.

"I was afraid of that." A streak of shaving foam against his chin. Dean drew the razor across his face and wiped it away.

"Getting cold feet?"

Dean left the question alone. "This has to be one of the weirdest things I've ever done," he offered instead.

"Not arguing with you there."

"At least I don't have to wear a tuxedo." He splashed aftershave on his chin, winced briefly, and patted his face dry.

Sam tossed him a clean T-shirt as he left the bathroom, and Dean looked down at it. "Oh, that's ironic. I'm wearing white. Who could have seen that coming?" He shrugged the shirt on, found a relatively clean pair of jeans, and presented himself to Sam. "How do I look?"

"Honestly?" Sam's smile was brighter than any sunbeam. "Happy."

The bright day had turned the field into a glowing blanket of opalescent green. Sam stood by a tall tree at the edge, leaning one hand against the bark, and nodded. Dean clutched his hands into fists and stepped forward across the meadow.

He cleared his throat when he'd gotten close enough. "Hey."

Castiel was sitting back, looking up against the mountain peaks. Two, three years ago he would have said "Hello, Dean," and he wouldn't have smiled. Now, he did. And he said, "Hi."

He'd let his stubble grow, a shaggy fringe on his chin, and the cuffs of his khaki pants were turned up. On a darker day he might have blended into the meadow entirely. Now, the crown of dark hair gleamed against the sunlight, a gentle corona. Dean caught his breath and sat down beside him in silence.

"Are you ready?" Castiel's voice was soft, the underlying gravel of his tone still there but eroded by time and peace into something smoother.

"You know what?" A shaky laugh. "I think I am."

Castiel swallowed. A jittery smile played over his face. "Then give me your hand."

Castiel's palm cupped around the offered hand and, his eyes downcast, he began to speak in an ancient language. The tongue of the angels had always seemed harsh to Dean's ear-- zo and ra and other hard syllables. But low and reverent, these words seemed as natural as the wind moving the grasses all around him. Castiel's eyelashes fluttered. At long last, he murmured "Amen," and fell silent.

Somewhere in there, Dean realized, he'd stopped breathing.

"Can I--" His throat contracted around the words. "Can I say something?"

Castiel's lips twitched. He looked up through the dark lashes at Dean. "Of course."

"I mean, I know it's not a traditional ceremony--"

"It's very traditional. It's just not your tradition."

"Fair enough. Point is, it's not part of the script, but I wanted to say something. It won't screw it up, will it?"

Castiel shook his head soberly. "Go ahead."

Dean looked at him. Now he had no idea what he wanted to say. Fear gripped him. But Castiel's hand was still warm around his, and that gave him some courage. "I just-- I'm really happy to be here, which sounds crazy coming out of my mouth. What the hell has gotten into me, you know? But--" His voice went very, very soft. "I love you. More than anything." A long pause. "So... I'm happy."

The slight smile drifting across Castiel's face made Dean's heart thump.

"Turn your hand over," Castiel said.

Thumb and forefinger bent together on Castiel's free hand. what he held between them looked not like a ring so much as a circle of light, a shimmer that drowned out whatever it was illuminating. Dean winced as Castiel slipped the shape around his finger, then gasped as the light began to grow. It whited out the firm lines of Castiel's face, the dark soft mop of his hair. Even the unstoppable blue of his eyes was absorbed and consumed by a mounting light that enveloped them both in its glow.

It grew to blindness and then faded out, leaving nothing but the sun's rays starting to filter toward afternoon.

Dean turned his hand over again. On his fourth finger burned a brand, dark brown-red, in a perfect circle all the way around. Below his, Castiel's hand bore an identical mark.

"That's it?" Dean said, his voice strangely high.

"That's it." A smile softer and brighter than moonlight.

Dean turned and looked over his shoulder. Against the tree at the edge of the field, Sam was rubbing his eyes in the wake of the sudden infusion of light. Dean lifted his newly branded hand and waved. Sam gave him a silent thumbs-up.

"Dean?" Castiel was pulling on his shoulder. His look was almost coy. "You could kiss me now."

"Yeah." He couldn't repress his grin. "Yeah, just a sec."

He turned back to face Sam one more time. This time he frowned and waved that newly branded hand dismissively.

The sound of Sam's laugher filtered soft and pleased across the field, and he headed back toward the car. He'd done his job as a witness; he wasn't invited to the next part.

"This time he frowned and waved that newly branded hand dismissively" XP
And my teeth have all rotten because of all the sweetness. *smiles toothlessly*. No, seriously, DON'T imagine me without teeth because that would be downright scary O.O

This is adorable. I love the fact that it wasn't a traditional wedding and that it ended up being so simple. Great job! :)

oohhhh, it's so sweet, I wuvs it! As much as Dean wuvs hugz! Seriously, i have a lil happy tear in my eye. What a perfect simple way for them to bind themselves in light to one another. Very IC to me, too, the branded rings, Sammy getting shooed away for the good stuff. I love all your stuff, hadn't seen this one though.
Just lovely. Just like you!

Thank you so much! I'm rather irrationally fond of this piece, even though it's a little bit of fluff and not much more. Glad you enjoyed it!
