Warnings: Dead people are dead.
Summary: Two mothers meet for tea and pastries. For schmoop_bingo!

In a juncture of heaven where roads and universes come together, Ellen and Mary meet for tea and pastries. They never knew each other when they were alive, but Ash has been very diligent in his search for others who departed from Earth, and when he threw the massive reunion party that ended with a very drunk John snoring on the Roadhouse bar and Pamela arguing with Jo in great detail about which Winchester had the better ass, Mary and Ellen struck up a friendship that continues to this day.

It's hard to be in heaven, especially with someone like Ash on your side, and not keep up with the goings-on among angels. So Mary and Ellen are both up to date on the latest. It hit Mary pretty hard, and it's taken Ellen several days to coax her out of her shell, persuade her to come out and see her friends again. Mary looks willowy, a little fragile and close to tears as she sips her tea, which never gets cold and always tastes slightly of mint and honey.

"You should be proud of them," Ellen says to her. Ellen's tea is darker, smokier, and sometimes she swears she can taste liquor in it, although she only ever gets as drunk as she wants.

"I am." Mary's eyes are downcast. "And I understand, I do. It's just too frustrating sometimes. To know this was, from the very beginning, too big for me to stop."

"But not them. They stopped it." Ellen leaned on her spoon, the round edge digging into the table. "You raised them right, Mary. So they learned their attitude from their father. But their morality, that they learned from you."

A flash of anger in Mary's eyes makes Ellen selfishly wish the two of them could have hunted together once upon a time. "You say that," Mary says, "but they barely knew me. Sam, especially. Sam..."

She puts a hand to her mouth. Her eyes brim with tears. The thought of where he is right now, even if it was for the good of the universe, breaks her every time.

"Mary." Ellen leans over the table at her. "Let's bust him out."

Mary's eyes widen, and she takes in a small breath. "Can we do that?"

"Probably not. But that never stopped them, so why shouldn't we step up for once?"

Mary's eyes shift back and forth. "I never wanted this for them. But I don't know if I-- I don't want to do this. I'm supposed to be in heaven. I shouldn't have to do this anymore." She wavers, and for an instant Ellen thinks she might faint.

Ellen has heard all about it. From Mary herself, and from John, who is still completely befuddled by the fact that Mary had been a hunter before he even knew what one was. She doesn't want this. She ran from it. To go up against gods and monsters... perhaps Ellen's asked too much. She fears for the fragile friendship she's been building here. Even in heaven, such things can still break.

And then Mary reaches over the table and squeezes Ellen's hand. "If we can," she says solemnly, "if this is possible--" The look of a hunter crosses her face. "I'm in."

Ellen draws in a breath. "Are you sure?"

Mary's nod is resolute. "It's the least I can do."

"Hell of a Mother's Day present we'd be giving them."

"Yes." The glimmer of a smile, even beneath watering eyes. "Yes, it would be."

Some time later, Sam blinks and sees an angel in white in front of him. Beside her is the face of an old friend.

"Mom?" he whispers, and all at once his body, so ravaged by hellfire and combat, is enveloped by soft arms that seem made of light.

Ellen watches, and when the approaching flames rage too high to ignore anymore, she interrupts. "Come on, kid. Time to go home."

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I would love to see these two girls go a-hunting through hell.

EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! ^______^

This is just perfect! I so love the idea of Ellen and Mary teaming up to get Sam (and Adam, even though he isn't hers) out of Lucifer's cage. They would just kick so much ass together. ^_~

She'd totally play den mother to Adam. Once she got over it. And she'd kick John's ass once she found out about him.

In fairness, she had been dead for several years.

Fun story!!!

lol, this is true, but she wouldn't be pleased he'd kept it from the boys. Thanks very much!

This is so awesome! I don't think I've seen Mary & Ellen fic before, but they would so be friends. And them bonding while Jo and Pam argue about the boys' butts? Perfection!

Pamela/Jo is my never-met femslash OTP. It's the weirdest thing, but I tend to like femslash pairings that never met in canon. Did the same thing with Heroes ... :D

And these two would be adorable, kvelling over their kids and hunting together. :D

They would! Although perhaps it's best they never meet: that much concentrated awesome in one place might make the universe implode (and after the boys worked so hard to save it, too).

Jo/Pamela? Hmm. Interesting...
